Poor MPG V6 Honda Accord

Hi Scotty and Community,

Hope all is well. I have a 2010 honda accord v6 and I'm getting really poor gas millage, say 5-8 miles per gallon in city driving. This is way lower than the EPA of 19 city 29 highway. I was wondering what could be causing this and how can I improve it? I watched videos about the fuel injector cleaners, but I really don't know if that is harmful or even works. Your input is greatly appreciated.

Thank you.

Mileage please. Every time. Thank you.

sorry about that. 90,000 miles

Has it been scanned for codes and live data? Any black smoke from tailpipe? Plugs carbon fouled? Any gas smell (leaks)?

With that mpg, you either should smell unburnt gas from the tail pipe and/or have lots of soots on the tasil pipe. Do you have any of these?
One more thing: Could you tell us how you calculated the mpg?

Well I honestly don't see any smoke. The exhaust pipe is very dry. I calculated the MPG with just the amount of miles I get on a full tank.

Do you drive aggressively? That can impact your gas mileage. If not, it could be many things:

  • MAF Sensor
  • Air Filter
  • Throttle Body
  • Spark Plugs
  • Clogged Fuel Filter
  • Clogged Catalytic Converter
  • Fuel Injectors

Also, you’ll need to adjust your valves like Scotty mentioned. That could also impact power and mpg.
