Other than the poorer fuel economy, are there any other downsides to TBI fuel injection?

Port injection is more precise than throttle body so gas mileage and power are both improved.

EFI = Electronic Fuel Injection.
Throttle body injection (TBI, also called Single Point Injection) usually is electronic so it's the same thing.
Maybe you're thinking of multi-point injection?

MPI gives more power and efficiency, and runs smoother. That's why TBI was left behind.
