Monitor engine condition and improve fuel economy

Hi Scotty,

I really enjoy your videos and the humor in your presentations you make me laugh. I will be replacing my timing belt next weekend on my Mazda 323 manual transmission (1993), has only 65,000 miles. However I have a question about monitoring condition of the engine, such as oil pressure, vacuum level, oil temp, battery DC voltage, and exhaust sensors ?  What is important to monitor while driving for early detection of problems and also what should I look at to improve fuel economy. Can I use a gauge like UltraGauge or ScanGauge or should I purchase some older style individual gauges.

Many thanks for your time and help.

Yours sincerely Peter

Your car is pre-OBDII. There's not much there to monitor.

Just listen for any changes in the engine sound, and you'll be fine. Happy motoring.

Fuel economy tips are in our FAQ.

@imperator "Happy motoring".... I got a chuckle from your use of this term and thought you might enjoy this:

@avalon04 what a happy little tv ad

@imperator I remember seeing commercials like that on TV, as well as gas stations routinely providing that kind of service. The attendants would check your tire pressure too! The 1950s gas station scene in "Back to the Future" was not much of an exaggeration...
