Gas smell in garage

  1. I have a 2014 GT Mustang 5.0 L and I park it in my garage, and I get a gas smell  in the garage but not in the car and I don’t see a visible leak. Just wondering what you think it could be. Thanks and I know it’s not the gas cap because it has The cap less inlet on it

Check your evap system.

Where do I start checking the evap system ?

Check hoses and components for leaks. Perform a smoke test if visual inspection does not find anything obvious.

Is your CEL on? Anything emissions related should trip your CEL if it's coming from the car.

The problem has to reach a certain level before it triggers the CEL. For some time now I have had a pending evap code but no CEL. After enough time has passed though it will finally trigger the light. I forget the code number but it has to do with the purge valve circuit. I know that circuit is working though because I can hear the valve click when triggering it with my Tech2. When the CEL turns on I just clear the code and the light stays off for several months, but a scan still shows the pending code. (Probably a bad hose, but because that code is not a problem for inspection and there are no symptoms I'm too lazy to tear into the evap system located behind the right front fender to check it out.)

So as far as the problem with the Mustang is concerned it would probably be a good idea to check for pending codes that may give a clue about what's going on.

Also make sure there are no leaky gas cans in the garage!

Interesting. Whenever my CEL illuminates for the purge valve, live data still shows regular shifts between positive and negative pressures.

@justin-shepherd - Saabs are weird. I've had a code pop up in the past for a variable valve timing solenoid - and the engine doesn't have variable valve timing. (It turned out the factory repurposed the code to mean something completely different.) With the evap code since the valve clicks on and off it's probably a deteriorated 27-year-old hose. Maybe one of these days I'll take a look at it but since it's not affecting anything I'm not very motivated to go in there.

Interesting, lol. Would never have guessed that. Mustangs of late tend to be OCD about gas emissions. My purge valve has always been working, but not up to the "standard" the computer wants, haha.
