Potential Damage from Overheating on 2002 Toyota 4Runner

Hey Scotty,

Last year I purchased a 2002 Toyota 4Runner Limited 2WD with 137k miles, V6 3.4L engine. I did all the maintenance needed when I got it. Last week I noticed some coolant on my garage floor, and when I drove it then temp gauge got near the high mark. I ran a scan with the Blue Driver tool, and the coolant temp peaked at 260 degrees. I slowly drive back home about 2 miles, and towed it to the shop.

The shop found a leaking radiator and replaced it with a Denso. They ran a combustion test, and said it was fine. My question is, did the 4Runner suffer any damage? The car currently has 151k miles and I’m using it as my daily driver. I want to keep this for much longer, and hoping this didn’t cause damage that I’ll have the repair later on. Thanks for your help!

Usually, when Toyotas overheat, they blow a head gasket.  If the mechanic checked this and said it was OK, then you should be fine.  If you start it some morning and it runs rough with white smoke, your head gaskets are shot.

OK, thanks for the note! Was the coolant temp of 260 dangerous? I pulled over for a few minutes, and slowly drove about 2 miles to get home. Hoping this doesn't cause any issues later. Thanks for the info!
