I have Camry 2005 200000 miles.
Power steering pump and rack were replaced a month ago.
Couldn't get OEM rack and pinion so went aftermarket (dont know brand), pump is OEM.
Steering feels great , no leaks however, there is slight to moderate whining noise, I would say on scale 1 to 10 about 3. And mostly noticeable when you in park. When you drive it happens very rarely and only when you drive out from a parking on low speed.
So my question is how silent or loud my rack should be?
I tried to open reservoir and move steering wheel side to side to bleed out the air. Looks like it helped a little and reduced sound to about 2 out if 10. Fluid at the top level.
I also have a Corolla 1998 and seems like there is almost no sound from power steering rack.
But maybe there is different type of rack on Camry then on Corolla. I didnt really pay attention at any sounds before replacement, so I cant tell if its normal or not.
People on Youtube post steering noise problems but those are severe nothing like mine.
Is it normal?
Did you bleed the air out of the power steering pump?
The reason that the rack and pinion is whining is because the joints in the steering linkage are worn. If the situation is not severe, you'll be fine. Just make sure it's not squeaking- then you would have to replace it immediately.
