Problem with partial drainage of engine oil

hello scott kilmer

car info:
fiat ducato. multijet 130. diesel
car's year-make-model: 2013.
a used car. i bought it at 2017.
from dealership.
manual gear.
kilometrage: 110,000 kilometers.

problem details:
the engine oil capacity is 5.8 liters. when i change the engine oil , every year since i had bought the car, always 3.5 liters are being drained (and of course the new oil capacity is also 3.5 liters). the engine oil is being drained alright ,and i don't see any sludge, but the oil sure looks dirty.
why is that? is there a solid sludge somewhere which takes up space? or maybe the oil stick is wrong? even in the in the garage they don't know why.

Probably should drop the oil pan and see if it's full of crud.

We don't get this engine over in the US - is this a "wet sump" engine with an oil pan that has a drain plug on it, or is it a "dry sump" engine with a oil reservoir separate from the engine?

If there is indeed 2.3 liters of oil not being drained out of the sump/reservoir, when you put fresh oil into the engine and it circulates for a couple minutes, the oil on your dipstick should be noticeably dirty, unlike the fresh, clean oil one should see on a dipstick after a change. Is this the case? I would double check whatever documentation you have/can get about the oil capacity of your engine

a. it's a wet sump.
b. you do have a copy model. it's the ram promaster. {black}
c. yes, after oil exchange, and couple of minutes circulation, oil on dipstick is noticeably dirty.
d. yes, i double checked about the engine oil capacity. it's 5.8 liters.

OK - from what I see, you are right about the capacity, and should get that quantity drained. The only things I see that could be causing this is if the vehicle isn't warmed up and on a level surface. Are you jacking up the van/RV/car when doing the oil change?
