Looking to help out this old gem by adding an electric fan to assist with idle/parked cooling. Trying to determine what route i should take regarding placement of the fan, should i place the fan so that it blows through the condenser and radiator, or should i place the fan inside,as to pull ait through the condesor and radiator. There are many variables, however this would be strictly for using while parked at idle with a/c running. The truck is not runninh hot (not out of normal range) just looking to have something assist with the idle cooking here in the hot Florida summers where our outside temps navigate their way to 95 to 100 degrees quite frequantly.
I am considering running the fan on a switch via a relay, versus running it via a temp sensor.
Just interested in hearing your version of what would be the bezt route to take prior to diving in. Perhaps a little advice on what to look for in an electric fan as well.
Thank you in advance Scotty, D in Florida.
I would reconsider. Why replace a good reliable mechanical fan with a less reliable electrical one that moves less air?
Don't fix what aint broken.
You want the fan to pull air into the engine bay, not push it out. When you're driving down the road, the air flows through the grille, over the condenser and radiator, then hits the fan. The fan is supposed to simulate this when you're not moving.
Why are you putting in another fan? The engineers took the fact it will idle in a hot environment into consideration when they designed the vehicle. Unless you do prolonged idling like the police do in their cruisers, there's no real reason to add another fan. Maintain your cooling system and it should be fine.
If you even have the room behind your grille, you can just wire it to a simple switch and fuse setup off the battery like he does air conditioner compressors if he needs to bypass a faulty computer. Turn it on and off manually.
Like @mmj said, why replace a mechanical fan with electric when you don't have to. I'll bet your 16 year old fan clutch is shot and needs to be replaced - spin it by hand, if little or no resistance, replace -

I think he meant whether to put the fan in front of the radiator to push it through or behind the radiator to pull it through.
