Reliability: 23 RAM TRX vs 23 Tundra TRD Pro

My question is essentially in the title. I know Scotty's general opinion on Chrysler quality and Toyota quality, but I have also heard him talk highly of the TRX. I know these two trucks are NOT in the same category for almost anything other than 1/2 ton truck, but I'm not asking for opinions on that. I really just want to know which vehicle will offer greater long-term reliability and low frequency & cost of repairs. Long-term for me is defined as 6 years / 125,000 miles plus.

The TRX is a 6.2 L Supercharged Engine, the Hellcat, and the TRD Pro is the Hybrid version of the new Turbo charged 6.

Toyota, all day long.

@doc
Even given the new gen problems I keep hearing about?
I historically agree with you, but am concerned on this new gen.

I'll try to be as objective as I can.  That's a little difficult because both models are new and different enough from prior iterations that you can't make generalizations from the past.  Obviously if you go just on "brand" reliability and history of past trucks, there's no comparison (the Tundra has always been more reliable than equivalent Ram trucks).  But I think the whole point of your question is to judge the trucks on their own merits, not based on some other trucks that existed in the past.

The TRX's bones are solid.  The base engine should have good reliabilty. The rest of the driveline also is pretty robust.  You may have shift problems in the transmission at some point, but the system overall is pretty beefy.  So if you are nice to it, it should last a long time.  But that is kind of the problem.  People don't buy a TRX because they want to play nice.  They want to give it the beans and hear that glorious blower.  But of course, if you are driving like a maniac and bombing down every dirt road, the reliability is going to suffer and things are going to break.  And so in the end you are left with just another Stellantis product and all the quality issues that entails.  AND - (here's the kicker) - because it is a niche model with a bunch of expensive performance parts, when something does go out it is going to be $$$ to fix it.

The equivalent risk on the Tundra is the turbos and the hybrid system. The turbos have definitely had some teething issues, but I doubt that will be a problem for long (probably already fixed).  And Toyota's hybrids have been the best in the industry for 20 years.

You specifically mention 6 years/125K miles.  In that time frame, if you don't drive the TRX like a crazy person, It will probably be fine.  Maybe not great, but fine.  Likewise, the Tundra might have some infotainment issues in that time frame, but probably nothing major.  It's AFTER that when I suspect there will be some separation.  The Tundra is a 200,000 mile (if not 300,000 mile) truck.  The TRX is probably not.

Thanks! This is exactly the type of take I was looking for.
After spending some time on the 2022+ Tundra FB group, I was getting a little worried from the reported issues. But I believe they are far fewer than it appears. And I do feel like it's a better long-term buy than the TRX.

Go with the Tundra. They initially had waste gate issues but that has been resolved. The hybrid part of it nobody makes hybrids as good as Toyota.
