We got the unfortunate news that the camshaft in our 2013 Honda Odyssey is in need of replacing. Our mechanic suggested we just trade-in the vehicle before it gets too bad, but the cost of cars is so ridiculous. So our options are to either have an engine rebuild for ~8-9k (we already were in need of an oil-pump housing repair) or trade it in for $7,500 (per KBB) and get a new car. In my mind, the cons of trading it in is spending 25k vs 9k...and that's for a 5 year old Sienna close to 100k miles. But the cons of just repairing the Odyssey is that apparently it's going to continue to give us troubles, and it has 146k miles on it.
So my question is: Will repairing the camshaft/rebuilding the engine keep us out of the car shop for the next 5+ years? Or should we just go ahead and replace the Odyssey with a newer Sienna?
I can get a remanufactured Odyessy engine for about $4500 plus about $1k installation. Where are they getting $9K to rebuild yours? I'd get a reman engine and save myself $4000.
I would trade it in. The cost to fix is worth more than the vehicle.
If everything else on the vehicle is okay, including your transmission, a new engine is probably okay. But if its going to soon need alot more work, then no id get rid of it.
If you have done good consistent maintenance on the overall car, I would find a low mileage junk yard with warranty or go with a good engine rebuild house as Doc says. Otherwise trade.
Nope, they have weak transmissions. You'll end up putting that engine in there and 20k miles later the trans starts to go. Just my opinion.
