Should I switch my new Bronco booking with a new Honda Passport?

Hey Scotty,

I've heard your recommendations on staying away from small displacement twin turbos on larger vehicles (Bronco). I also believe you are not fond of GDI injection (Carbon build-up).

Still don't have a build Date, Reserved July 19th, 2020! Waiting on a Wild Trak

I'm thinking of getting practical and switching to a naturally aspirated V6. That said, what are your thoughts on the 3.5ltr. V6 in the 2021-2022 Honda Passports?

Thanks, Miller Mark

You will be alot better off with the Honda.

Honda PAssport is a much better car than the Bronco, BUT...

Because it has the same powertrain from the Pilot I would be a little skeptical about that transmission since Honda didn't exactly do a good job with the programming, so make sure you road test one, if you like the way it shifts, go ahead and buy one.

Otherwise, a Toyota 4runner is a good alternative and it's just as capable as the Bronco.

If you are looking for a Bronco alternative, the 4Runner is probably the closet thing I would recommend, like what was mentioned above.

The Pilot is fine, but IMHO, it is a different category and different target market. A Pilot is more comparable to a Highlander, which is a fine choice as well.

It really depends what you need. More off road than road: 4Runner.

More city and highway than off-road: Pilot, Passport, or Highlander.

I am impressed and actually like the Bronco. I think it actually beats the 4Runner and the Wrangler in terms of off road capability. But I’d still get a 4Runner because I don’t trust the projected reliability of the other two.

My 2021 Ridgeline has the 3.5L V6 and it is plenty quick and for the first 17k miles has been 100% absolutely flawless. My first two Honda vehicles (other is a 2020 Accord 2.0T Sport) have really impressed me as far as reliability goes.

Which Bronco do you have?

Honda Passports are way better than an underpowered Bronco. Just keep in mind that they have cylinder deactivation. Also, you need a oil catch can to prevent carbon buildup.

I owned a 2016 Honda Pilot Touring - a vehicle that shares a lot of components with the Passport. Both are built in Lincoln Alabama. The Pilot was an okay vehicle however it had several unusual issues over the five years I owned it. The electrical system was a bit wonky to the point whereas we didn't feel safe in it anymore as the vehicle would literally shut itself off while driving down the highway. I found the build quality to be underwhelming too - loose trim, leaky sunroof, water in the liftgate, etc. Didn't have any issues with the powertrain though - the 9 speed tranny was a bit of a concern back then.

I too think a Toyota 4Runner is more of a comparable unit and a significant upgrade to either vehicle.

I don’t know about you, but I’d be livid if I had to wait indefinitely, just for a car..!
