I started a project a few years ago for my dad. His motor went in his 1996 GMC Jimmy knocking real bad. So I decided it would be a good idea to replace the engine. Body and frame are in great shape otherwise would have been sent to the junkyard. This project has been put on the back burner for quite some time due to an injury and life in general. The bad engine is still in the jimmy and I had got a replacement used engine 3 years ago has been sitting around for a few years. I turn the cam a few times a year. So I have a few questions. Any pointers will be a big help.
Best way to remove the top rear bolts on transmission?
Anything I should consider doing to the replacement motor?
What should I look out for when pulling the motor?

Pull the oil pan and look for broken off piston skirts in it. Easier to replace a broken piston or two versus the entire engine.
Junk yard engines are just buying the same problem. Replacement engines (same with transmissions) should always be a factory remanufactured with a nationwide warranty.
As far as upper bolts...long long extension, swivel socket wrapped with electrical tape to lessen its floppiness (not a socket and a universal joint...an actual swivel socket). Impact gun...only to loosen, not tighten.
Used engine...strip to bare block, have block checked for warpage, have heads pressure tested, checked for warpage, and replace everything. Test run before install. (cheaper to buy a remanufactured engine with all the original factory engineering flaws updated and get a nationwide warranty)
motor pulled it is now out, On to a motor rebuild on replacement motor, feel free to leave any tips
Many, but start with "clean" if you do rebuild, and check EVERY spec (main bearing, hone pattern, cylinder eccentricity...a LOT).
If quality rebuild is purchased from KNOWN good source... your hardest part is behind you, just take your time installing and double check everything... and be safe ; ).
