I assume most used car dealers will clear the codes before offering a vehicle for sale. When test driving, how many miles need to be driven before on can plug in one of those devices and scan the car to see what issues are being reported?

Most of the scan tools tell you if the codes are erased and also tell you the erased codes too.

Usually, 20 min driving should restore the computer. Although, most of the scan tools (including cheap ones) tell you if the codes are erased and also tell you the erased codes too.
