Retired couple looking for new reliable vehicle in Canada

Hi Folks,

We are so glad that we have this community of experienced honest mechanics to get advice!

We are looking for a new car. Our previous car was a RAV 4 that we had for many years. As far as price goes, maybe around $40,000. We were thinking hybrid because of better gas mileage but we also might need the AWD for Canadian winters.

We are looking for a new car that is:

  1. reliable
  2. durable- doesn't fall apart after 100,000 miles
  3. good gas mileage
  4. comfortable seats
  5. good acceleration
  6. ease of getting in & out of car
  7. not cheap interior
  8. maybe all-wheel drive for Canadian driving
  9. not Korean models- Scotty said that they were not reliable

We did some research in Consumer Report & wondered about these vehicles:

  • Toyota Camry Hybrid- does the hybrid come with AWD?
  • Toyota Prius
  • Honda CRV
  • Subaru Forester
  • Mazda CX-5
  • Toyota Corolla Cross- one review said that it has very poor acceleration & not available for many months
  • Any other suggestions from you?

Lastly, do you know of good honest mechanics in Ontario, Canada?

I think RAV4 should be a good one as well. If you really want the hybrid, it has that option as well.

Thanks for your tip !Hoping for more replies so that we can have more suggestions to choose from.

How can I modify my question in my original posting?

My retired parents loved the switch from a sedan to the high seating position of a crossover/SUV.

I think your best options will be another RAV4, or CR-V.

Ofcourse, test drive all your potential options & then eliminate the ones which don’t suit your requirements.

Thanks for taking the time to write. We value what you all say.
My post is too long so could one of the moderators edit it the best way he see fit?
Important to us are- reliable, durable, good gas mileage so maybe hybrid, comfortable seating, AWD, good acceleration

No worries. Your original question seems fine to me. Maybe post a new question, asking for mechanics in your area.

Why not get Rav4 again? Especially since you liked the previous one. AWD is an option.

$40k can get you a lot of car. That's Highlander range, if you wanted. Higher end. More power, but more consumption too.

I would still be hesitant about hybrids. What happens when it does wear out?

Thanks for taking the time to add your advice.

$40,000 is what we paid for our RAV 4 back in '09. Prices are high in Canada.

Our present RAV 4 Sport, 6cly. does not get great gas mileage which is why we thought perhaps hybrid. I know Scotty said that hybrids are expensive to fix and not everyone knows how to fix them. But I thought it was still worth it because of the great gas mileage. But maybe I am wrong.

Do hybrids wear out faster than regular cars and require more repairs?

you should be able to get a new 2020 AWD for in the low to mid $30k's if you know how to talk to salesmen. (in Canada). Did you do the math to find out the fuel cost you would save with hybrid? How many years would you have to drive it for to balance the higher price? I don't know if they wear out faster, but I know the electric components are very, very expensive to replace and service, and it's likely the dealer will be your only option.
