Road trip oil change.

Hey Scotty,

I am taking my 2011 Toyota 4Runner on a 10,000 mile road trip. I have 210,000 miles on the odometer and changed Mobil 1 0W-20 oil every 5k miles since the truck was new. Owners manual says oil changes are required every 10k miles but I never wait that long. Should I put Mobil 1 Annual Protection oil this time since it will be a longer interval before I get a chance to change it again?

Thanks!

@victor-p
I would keep it the same annual protection just means if you dont hit the miles it last a year I dont think 10000 would hurt it but if your really worried about it change it mid trip

I’m sure oil is going to be okay for the entire trip. But I know Mobil 1 is good for 10,000 miles while extended protection is good for 15,000 and annual is 20,000.

Stick to what you have been using so far. 10,000 miles of highway driving has the equivalent wear of 1,000 miles city driving.

I would change the oil with the one you’ve been using all these years before the road trip, enjoy the 10,000 miles, then come back & change the oil once you’re back home.

Out of curiosity, what oil specification does your owner’s manual recommend?

0W-20. All I’ve ever used was Mobil 1 with OEM filter.

Stick to it!

Just my experience, but I think you should worry more (and check very carefully) your belts, hoses, coolant condition, trans fluid level and condition on a 2011.

@glen_stet
All that had been serviced at 200,000 miles. New spark plugs, diff fluid, trans fluid, coolant, brake fluid, and belts. Runs like new with zero issues.

Oil is cheap. Engines are expensive. I would have the oil changed at 4 or 6 thousand miles on your trip.  That way you will be sure your truck has great care along the way.  Should not be hard to get a oil change with mobil 1 oil along the way.

   I would consider changing pads and brake fluid and coolant for the trip as well.  While your on the trip you will be much more comfortable with your car being freshly serviced with brakes and coolant.    Your only talking about 200 dollars of service work.

Just installed Akebono pads and rotors in all four corners less than 5000 miles ago. Have to admit that these are probably the best brakes I had on this truck so far. Brake fluid and coolant has also been changed recently.

Sure why not. Sounds like this "annual protection" stuff is higher spec oil. It might last longer. Maybe it's just marketing wank.  The worst that can happen is you waste a bit of money, but it's only once right.

Keep using Mobil 1 do it every 5k mile regardless
