Tire Size!

Hi,

I have a 2009 Pontiac G5 GT (I know, not a big fan of them but hey, here we are 😅) The tire specs say 205/50R17. I was wondering if I could use 215/50R17 or 225/50R17 and still be okay? Or should I just stick to the 205 and not worry about it. PS I’m out in Canada. Thanks

Do you have a reason for using the bigger tires?

Ive seen some tires on sale but I’m really looking for is better traction. It’s getting a little icy out here in the north 🙂

@the_x_switch
Don't they make good traction tread designed in the proper tire size?

@the_x_switch
I agree, see if you can find Michelin Pilot Sport 4 or another similar performance oriented tire in your stock size.

They do but the sale tires weren’t the size. So I’m just going to keep looking. It’s best I just bite the bullet and buy the proper winter tires

Does the stock size suffer from a lack of grip?

Both your alternate sizes increase the overall circumference, which will negatively affect driving dynamics.

Unless you need the marginally better ride quality of the 225/50, I’d say stick to the stock size.

Yes! I can’t seem to get enough grip. It’s winter driving now so I’m just trying to figure out what options I have best for traction. I’m also doing high way driving. I appreciate the response! 😇

To maintain the closest match to factory circumference, you’ll have to go for 225/45R17, but that may be too low a profile, depending on your road conditions. Make sure you get suitable tyres for snow, and get grippier tires for the summer. Good luck!

Awesome! Thanks for your help!
