Rough Idle + Codes

Topic starter

Recently my 2005 Subaru Forester x 2.5 L 4-cylinder with 238,000 miles started idling rough when I first start it up in the morning (I don't drive it a lot maybe a couple times a week)

Throttle has been cleaned a year or two ago and I just cleaned the throttle control valve. Haven't looked at all inside the throttle body.

Also been having codes for a while- P0420, P0442, P0457

Going to try lacquer thinner for the catalytic converter soon (P0420)

P0442 and P0457- My OBD says emissions leak detected small leak and loose gas cap. Gas cap seems pretty tight and clicks but there is some rust on the inside of the fuel filler entrance. I also researched that it might be the fuel filler neck and/or evap canister that needs to be replaced.

That video is nearly 12 years old now and it has been proven that lacquer thinner in the gas tank can cause severe damage to modern automobile fuel systems.

Oh. Wow. I did not know. Thank you!

Do not ever use lacquer thinner in your engine.
