Scan Tool Recommendation for Old Diesel Ambulance?

Topic starter

Would a scan tool for a diesel 1998 International 4700 with Allison transmission ambulance do anything?

I know it’s mostly mechanical, but I figured maybe there are things it can diagnose. Recommendations on scan tools that could read this vechicle?

I’m new to diesels, Internationals, and ambulances, but I’m planning to take frequent trips that will pass through remote areas and I’d like to be able to diagnose as much as I can! Thanks!

if a medium duty old diesel was OBDI/II or neither

neither. Medium & heavy duty vehicles have their own system. Here are some reviews:

There are scan tool recommendations in the FAQ, however they are general for different features and price levels rather than for specific vehicles. Unless someone here has successfully used a scan tool on the same kind of vehicle you'd have to contact the scan tool manufacturer for compatibility information.

@chucktobias Thanks for your reply! It’s not a modern passenger car, otherwise I know I’d be interested in the BlueDriver.

I just figured maybe someone would know if a medium duty old diesel was OBDI/II or neither, or if it’s all mechanical so there’s nothing to scan. I’m certain someone here would know this. And maybe (not likely) someone would know if there are utility modifications if it changes anything. Google isn’t what it used to be. And contacting manufacturers is unknown hours and days of wait times for responses, which I can do, but I figured I’d check here first.
