Hey Scotty,
Just watched a recent video and you said to post YouTube videos if needed of weird engine noises. So my 2018 Mustang GT with the Coyote Gen 3 V8 is the king of crazy noises. On Ford community forums, the big two noises are the "BBQ Tick" and "2K Rattle". Could you listen to my videos and let me know what you think?
Piston Slap, Rod Knock, or just crazy Ford noises?
For whatever it's worth, whenever I pull the dipstick... the oil looks really healthy and so far I'm not suspecting it of prematurely burning oil. It just sounds like crap at low speeds and any time you're at 2k RPMS. Engine performs well under load and sounds good otherwise. Last time I had the car in for service, I had a master tech drive the car and have me ride with them.... they said the car is healthy. The videos I shared with you are from a few months ago... but the car has run the same ever since I got it 1 1/2 years ago... hasn't gotten any worse or better.
Thank you for your time and help!

It's the famous Ford 3rd Gen Coyote rod knock. Had 2, they both did it. My '18 F150 used to sound like the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade rolling into my driveway. Ford says it is ALL normal. It isn't, but they will NEVER admit an issue. They will, however, happily sell you a new motor when yours goes bang outside of warranty.
Do you think it's that bad? IDK what to do, it's my dream car... but knowing it's probably going to blow up sometime out of warranty isn't too good of a feeling. I know cars can go as little as 5 miles on rod knock, or sometimes 100k........ Not sure what to do. Like you said, no one at Ford will even touch my engine bay.... everything is normal until it falls out of warranty. I have so many mixed emotions on what to think or do. What did you do with your F150... were both of those engines for that truck, or did you have a second vehicle with the same engine in it?
I had a '18 Mustang GT and an '19 Mustang GT CS. Both had those same sounds and Ford said both were normal. I got rid of both after I used them for the promo I bought them for. My F150....was a disaster. 3 engines and a trans within the first 6k miles/6 months. I eventually sued Ford and got them to buy it back after a year of litigation. That was the last Ford product I, or any of my friends and family, will ever own. And I have a huge collection of Mustangs. But Ford has really fallen out of grace. I get how you feel. Some guys have had their engine boroscoped and found some scratching in the cylinder walls. Problem is, Ford still has an acceptable tolerance for that which is crazy to me. If it gives you piece of mind, my '18 had 10k miles and my '19 had 8k miles when I sold them. Both made noises from day one, but neither suffered an engine failure. The problem is Ford quietly switched to plasma lined cylinder walls in 2018 from the very dependable steel sleeves they had been using. Price and weight was the idea but it had only been done previously by Ford in the limited run Shelby's. When they tried to do it for all their 5.0L V8's, quality got real bad and engines started blowing up. If you Google 2018 Mustang engine issues you'll find a lot of reading. I feel for you man as I really thought my two Mustangs were awesome, but I wasn't going to roll the dice long term since Ford was obviously not going to back their product.
I truly do appreciate all of your insight and information @Mod_Man. You have taught me so much. I'm still caught on what to do. I love the car too damn much to say goodbye. I have seen a few people with the same noises on a 2018 GT and it's still running fine at 60k miles.... obviously every car is different and Ford does have major issues here. Stay tuned.... I'm not sure what I do yet. Thank you again for your time and knowledge.
Hey man you're welcome. This is exactly what we are here for. I do miss my Cali Special something fierce as I had pretty much fully customized it to what I wanted. But the noises made me nervous. Don't get me wrong, as you said, some guys are up there in mileage with things still popping/banging away but still working so I'm NOT saying sell it. I really understand you wanting to keep it 100%. Its more I just wanted to let you know what I've seen so you could keep it in mind and make an informed decision on what you want to do. I would understand your reasoning either way you went, keep or sell. I wish you the best of luck with it and if you have any other questions, feel free to come back and ask. {blackemo}:hotdrink:
