Hi scotty/all, I'm driving the above, about a year ago I noticed a rattle-not very loud coming from engine when idling. I've since traced this with advice from the internet and a mechanic...input shaft bearing on the gearbox, a used gearbox installed is €300 with no guarantee but the car only has 79k miles so I want to hold onto it as it should do twice that and more, regular oil changes etc-done by myself.  My question, if the shaft bearing goes does the gearbox go or could i drive it in one gear?, dont want to put a gearbox in unless absolutely necessary-costs etc. many thanks in advance, regards, DD

Hello,

The input shaft is the shaft that transmits the drive from the engine into the gearbox,

If it fails you will lose drive, A used gearbox is probably not a good idea as these vw gearboxes

give trouble, An overhauled unit would be best.

I include a link for your information.

All the Best.

Thanks dv for the information, greatly appreciated : ), think i'll have to risk a used one as i cant afford a reconditioned one. Can i ask one more thing ; I ve recently had the clutch changed after only 2 yrs, can the input shaft rattle affect the clutch operation?, it was the floating circular piece inside the housing of the clutch broke when it failed. the pressure plate and the pads were all ok. thanks again in advance 🙂
