Second Generation Toyota Matrix Opinions

Is this a good car? I'm sticking to 2009-2013 because I think the earlier ones are ugly but anyways are these cars good? When the time comes I will test drive it as well. I heard they were zippy cars and if I like it I want to know if its reliable. From my research, I see the 2.4 2AZ-FE engine is prone to oil consumption, so I will stick to the 1.8 2ZR-FE engine. Is this a good engine? Prices in my area around 4-5 thousand. Originally considering Honda Fit as well but for some reason prices are trough the roof on those (7-8 grand for 10-12 year old models!!!).

Any other good alternatives you mmay offer as a first car besides the Corolla, Civic, and Fit? A late 90s early 2000s Camry is also on the table...

TIA for your opinions!

The Matrix is a good vehicle.

Thanks Kerem! I appreciate it the more answers the better!

Those are solid cars and solid engines. Go ahead and buy one.

Thank You

Excellent vehicle with the 1.8L 2ZR-FE engine.  Which transmission are you going with?  They can ride a little firm, but test drive and see how you like it.  Overall, I recommend them.

Thanks, I will most likely get an Automatic as this is going to be my future first car and in the city. I also know the previous generation Corolla/Matrix had issues with their manual transmissions.
From what I have seen in my research and on this forum the 4 speed automatic is basically bulletproof but what is your opinion on it?

The automatics are good, and the manual transmission problems were fixed for that generation.
