Hello, please looking to buying a 2004 toyota solara v6 coupe 170,000 miles, seller says it shakes sometimes at 60mph, he bought a new car and wants to get rid of this one what could be causing this, and about how much would it cost me to get it fixed, a mechanic said he'll need 250 bucks to check the car before letting me know what needs to be fixed, trying to find out about how much I might need to put in to fix this and it's worth it, this will be my first car.

Thank you in advance for sharing your knowledgable insights.

$250 for a pre purchase inspection sounds steep!

Coming to the car, what actually shakes? Is it the steering wheel, or the brake pedal, or the entire car itself?

It could be anything from bad tyres, to out of balance tyres, to an out of alignment front end, bad CV axles or bent/worn out suspension parts or the worst one, previous wreck damage.

Still, if you trust this mechanic & if you’re serious about the car, go test drive it first & if the shaking is the only issue, spend the $250 to get a thorough pre-purchase inspection (no matter which car you buy).

All the best!

Thank you, the seller says the entire car shakes at 60mph

The entire car shakes at 60mph?

I'd walk.

The reason being, if he has driven it with an out of balance tire (as a guess) and just not even cared to fix the issue, what other maintenance has been skimped on?

I don't buy cars with known issues, even if it is something small. If it's such a cheap fix, then fix it and then sell it. A full car vibration could be one thing, or a combination of things. It could be a simple fix, or a complex fix and the reason they are selling the car. No thanks.

And $250 for a pre purchase inspection is fairly steep. I'd expect more like $100-$150.

Thank you very much, I'll find keep looking then.
