My grandson is looking at a 2017 HondA hrv ex WITH 58000 MILES AND CVT TRANSMISSION. are there any major problems known with this year and model? Thanks for any advice you can give.

A lot of people who have no experience with these products may say otherwise, but these transmissions are of very poor quality.

Where I live transmission shops are becoming filled with these (together with other failed designs like Renault-Nissans pre-redesign Jatco units and Renault-Ford Dry PowerShift)

Here’s a description of the common issues with these in Honda’s own words, (also available on NHTSA’s website on the 2017 Honda HRV under the “Manufacturer Communications” section)

Honda has put out multiple service bulletins and yet, as far as I see - the issues with very premature wear or as Honda calls it “early deterioration” are still common.

There have been many complaints on this forum about the Civic’s CVT, and as far as the available information, it’s a similar unit to the ones installed on the HRV.

Looking online, Honda has extended the warranties on some of these clunkers to 150,000 miles or 7 years - but please check that this does apply to the car you’re interested in. I would not keep one for long outside of that extended warranty period.

personally I would look for other options, but I would definitely pick a Honda with a CVT over any small GM/ Ford/ FiatChrysler product as overall thats still a much better car.

Honda cvts are some of the best.  Personally I rather not have one.

While regular automatics are best, but still a Honda or Toyota CVT isn't bad. It's not like CVTs from other manufacturers that have ton of problems, so if buying CVT go with Honda or Toyota.

I don't know what price this used hrv is, but one thing I've been telling many people these days is given the current used market in many cases buying new is worth it a lot better. I have seen brand new vehicles cost less than used of the same or like with $1k or $2k more being able to buy brand new. Just something to consider.
