Hi Scotty. I'm looking to buy a used work van for approx $5,000. I live in Australia and the Toyota Hiace is very popular, and I've read that it is very durable and fairly cheap to maintain. Do you think it is worthwhile buying one that has done over 300,000 km? I would be looking at a model from between 1998 and 2004. I ask because I've seen some for sale that have done over 900,000. What is your opinion of this van? Thanks!
If it checks out mechanically, yes. 300k kms sounds like a lot but it isn't much for one of those. They can run forever with proper maintenance.
Yes, those vans are workhorses in the tourism industry, in SE Asia. With a Diesel engine especially, they can run practically forever as they are very robust & abuse friendly.
As with any used, high mileage vehicle, have it thoroughly inspected by a Toyota mechanic, before you buy it.
I’ve seen a 2.5L D-4D with 1,000,000 kms which still had the original engine.
That is 180k miles, NOTHING for an older Toyota diesel pickup.
