Should I change my transmission fluid if I am uncertain if it was ever changed?

I bought a 2012 Nissan Versa hatchback 1.8L (Special, not the S or SL but probably the SL in terms of engine) new from the dealer. I paid for the maintenance program but since it’s now expired I realize I haven’t changed my transmission fluid since 100K. I want to say they changed it but it’s been so long that I am actually uncertain! My girlfriend who used to work at Valvoline says not to change it if it wasn’t ever changed since it’s probably going to do more damage from gunk/metal build up. I drive this thing like a grandma and so far the only thing going bad is the catalytic converter, otherwise it’s started every time, and since it was used for business traveling, I’ve gotten all my money back from using this car. Once this thing finally breaks down I’ll shop for a Lexus or Toyota but if the fluid was never replaced would you leave it alone or replace it? I watched your video about religiously replacing the transmission fluid on this very car so, yikes... here I am!

sucks that Nissan turned out to sell out their quality, before this car I owned two 93 Altimas and was loyal to the 90’s quality, I was officially suckered :-/

How much is on the odometer now?  If you call Nissan, they probably have a record of what was done and when, but you should be keeping your own records.

142K (sorry forgot to add mileage and yes good idea to contact dealer!)

Also, read this excellent Sticky posted under the FAQ:

In addition, take a look at the ATF.  Is it red, transparent, relatively clean, and doesn’t smell burnt?

Same whatever dealer did it should be able to tell you what was done and it all depends on how many miles you’ve done since then

Since this is about changing transmission fluid I’d like to post my situation than make a new thread.

I have a Toyota 4Runner Ltd, automatic 4WD, 182,xxx miles

To the best of my knowledge it’s never had the transmission serviced. The trans fluid is red and it shifts pretty smoothly. I don’t use the 4x4 function.

Im not a DIYer. I’ve called around to different mechanics and transmission shops. But none of them will do a drain & fill. They all do a flush.

If anyone in the San Antonio area knows of anyone please let me know. Thanks.
