I recently got lucky and bought a 1998 Oldsmobile Aurora for $700. I spent another $1300 to get it running and now I'm in a unique situation. I didn't realize how notorious the engine inside it was until afterwards, but it's a V8 4.0 NorthStar with 120,000 miles. It runs fine and I had it checked out, other than oil leaks the engine and transmission are doing fine. It needs about another $1000 to make it road worthy, new CV axles, wheel bearings and breaks and I got myself a fun car. From what I can tell the head bolts when overheated lead to the engine blowing gaskets, and the kit to fix it and labor is about $7000. As long as I don't overheat it, and it's doing fine in that department, it should be just fine.
I'm not well versed in the North star department, should I sell it and get my $2000 back or stick with it? It's a fun little car, I'd love to hear your opinions.
Will this be your only vehicle and/or a daily driver, or more of a fun weekend car?
If it's just going to see occasional use and you have other transportation available, I'd say go for it if you enjoy the vehicle and can baby the engine.
If you wanted this vehicle to be your daily driver...me, personally, I would sell it while I could get out the same amount of money I put into it. I see a potential money pit here. JMHO, of course.
