Should I use ester based oil in my car

I live in Scotland and own a 2008 Renault Mégane r26 F1, I have owned car since new,  it has 66000 miles and I now serviced the car myself, it is serviced yearly as I only do around 3000 miles per year, as I have been looking into oil for upcoming service I have noticed a lot of hype about ester based fully synthetic oil being the oil to use, however I have been looking into it and it is supposed to soften rubber seals and some forums are saying this is not a good thing for older engines, is that true or is it just ballony.

Thanks for your brilliant content, as a old school mechanic I have learnt a lot from you and saved myself a few bucks along the way👍

2008 isn't an "older engine", and there's nothing wrong with "synthetic" oil.

Don't make things more complicated than they need to be. Use any oil that meets the specs in your owner's manual. Details in our FAQ.
