Hey,

Looking for a used starter motorcycle.

This would be my first bike so looking forward something reliable and easy to maintain. Was originally looking at a Suzuki TU250X but there aren't any near me (New York City) at a reasonable price right now.

Any recommendations are appreciated. Thanks.

There are a lot of choices - and a lot depend on whether you want to commute, tour, play on curvy roads or ride off road, and your budget. New or used? Many people recommend getting a used bike first, as you might "outgrow" your first bike, or decide you'd like a different type. I'd go with the Japanese brands if you're looking for reliability (and better paint and chrome).

But first,go to a Motorcycle Safety Foundation Basic Rider course

"The MSF Basic RiderCourse is designed for beginning riders of all ages. More than 8 million motorcyclists nationwide have graduated from a RiderCourse since 1974. Eight to ten hours of classroom-style instruction – including, in some states, the Basic eCourse that you complete online before attending your first formal classroom session – prepares you for ten hours of hands-on riding exercises in a controlled, off-street environment – typically, a paved parking lot. Motorcycles and helmets are provided free of charge, or a subsidized low cost for your use during the course. In the classroom, you’ll learn about the different types of motorcycles, layout and operation of the basic controls, and how to become a safer, more responsible rider. You’ll then move to the riding range where your MSF-certified RiderCoach will guide you through the basic skills of straight-line riding, stopping, shifting, and turning, gradually progressing to swerving and emergency braking.

Hey,
Thanks for the help. I actually already took the course a while back but never got around to buying a bike.My budget is up to $7000, but I'm definitely looking to spend a lot less than that.

I'm not looking to zip around too fast so that's why I was interested in the Suzuki tu250. Don't mind getting older bikes as I work on my own car and want to be able to learn to work on my bike as well.

Any recommendations on a bike I could learn to work on would be great too. Thanks

Nothing wrong with the Suzuki (I have a DL650 myself). But I'd recommend a Honda 300 - it's reliable, a little more freeway-friendly, and you can get it in so many different flavors - street, dual purpose, cruiser to fit where you are going to ride and what's most comfortable. Here's a comparison test. There are a lot of Kawasaki 400/300/250s out there on the used market, and they would be a good choice, too.
