Steering wheel randomly shakes

2007 Toyota Camry with 120K miles. Ever since I've had the car the steering wheel will shake randomly at city/highway speeds. Generally between 20 mph - 30 mph sometimes, but not always. Then on the highway if you hit 75 mph or over my goodness it will shake the stuffing out of you.

The car doesn't veer one way or the other when on a straight stretch so (for now) I think the alignment is ok. I've been waiting to change the tires because the set that came on the car appear to be fine good quality tires and I figured a bad tire would cause consistent problems? The transmission shifts like a dream. No other noticeable problems other than the jerking, meaning that the passenger wouldn't know the wheel was shaking unless I pointed it out because the ride is still smooth.

Any thoughts on what I might look into?

In case like this it is sometimes the harmonics of the two tires in which they are at on a certain position on the wheel relative to the opposite wheel will create this situation. Now it may be other factors but to eliminate the above scenario I would advise that you rotate the tire front to back as a test to see. The possibility that your rear tires would do the same thing is pretty remote to none.   Another issue before you do what I proposed is to check HOW accurate are the balance of your present tires.

BUT you are going to purchase some NEW TIRES so you could render this problem totally moot. Right?
