Steering dead zone

Hi Scotty!

I got a E90 BMW 335i (RWD)
After a sidewalk collision, replaced front left alignment, some left alignment parts - my (euro expert) mechanic made a wonderful job with the alignment. It goes perfectly straight and smooth. But he couldn't fix the "dead zone" of 9mm (1 degree) on the steering wheel when driving straight. Steering on this BMW is otherwise very precise and responsive - so this small issue is a big problem when driving straight.
Is there hope to make it perfect again?

Hope dies last. It can be done but can also cost money.

Nothing is impossible if your pockets are deep enough. Especially when it comes to car parts.

what part is involved? I changed many parts already. you think my steering column is the cause?

Since your car suffered a collision, all bets are off. It could be one part or a few parts which are affected. Hence both the comments mentioning $$$ because it’s extremely difficult to pinpoint these things to just 1 part, after a wreck. You might keep throwing money & parts at it, but the problem may/may not go away. The steering rack might be the culprit, but again, it’s going to have to be diagnosed correctly first, before you replace it.
