I know Scotty has some great experience with products and recommends some on his videos but I haven't seen anything about steering wheels.
I was curious if there is a product to restore or at least prevent these rubbery plastic(probably?) steering wheels (2009 civic ex) from flaking off. I recently got this great deal car with 105k on it and it didn't have window tints so the steering wheel on the left side and some on top is really flaking and all damaged, I just wanna stop or slow that at least.
Thank you all who know anything about this.
You get at an interesting point, which is that urethane steering wheels are vulnerable to UV damage. And once they start to go, there is not much you can do to restore them. Of course you can use various protectants for prevention, but the thought of slippery goo on the steering wheel is not too appealing.
Most people just throw on one of those fuzzy elastic covers. But I’m with ITWT that a high quality leather cover is the way to go. Wheel Skins is probably the leading brand name, but there are others. The key is to get a cover that is specific to your wheel and take your time to install it cleanly (or get a pro install). A nice cover sewn on carefully can look just about “factree”.
Reupholster it or use a good quality steering cover (stitched on for a snug fit)..
I presently use stitched on imitation leather steering covers.
As an example from Google -

if you use a cover, make sure it's secured. This could kill someone.
