Scotty and friends, I have a 1999 Ford F250 with the 6.8 v10 and 4 speed auto. It has 196k miles of which I have personally put on 60. We use it regularly (12-15k miles a year) mostly pulling our 9500 lb gooseneck horse trailer. While it’s cosmetically rusty, the frame and power train are solid. I have had very few problems with it none of which I couldn’t fix myself. I love the truck but I’m torn between replacing it or making repairs as necessary to keep it turning the wheels. All my friends have new duramax or powerstrokes, which seem to live at the dealership for warrantee repairs. Diesels are expensive to maintain and repair. Can I still reliably haul horses hours away from home with this old farm truck? Or should a new truck be in my plans.
I just keep it. keep up with the maintenance
Calculate how much it costs annually to keep the thing running, and compare it what a new truck payment would be.
To rephrase mountainjoe.
If the yearly cost of maintenance is <<< the cost of a yearly car payment, keep it.
If the yearly cost of maintenance is >= the cost of a yearly car payment, get a new car.
