Subaru Outback extended warranty

Hi Scotty,

Great show!

I have a 2018 Subaru Outback 3.6R with 19K miles on it.  Bought it new, great car, and like every other Subaru I've owned it's been trouble-free.  The manufacturer's bumper-to-bumper warranty runs out 6/30/21 and I was contemplating paying $750 for an additional 42 month/60K extended warranty that covers everything but wear items.  Ordinarily, I would not bother but with the mountain of electronic gadgetry on the car (EyeSite, cameras, etc...) I wonder if the warranty might be worth it guessing that repair or replacement of any of those items would easily exceed the $750.  What do you think?

Cheers,

Joe

Do you have faith in your dealer/Subaru, that they will honour all/any warranty claims?

It’s up to you, but usually they almost always find a way to not fix things under warranty.

In my opinion, I think it’s just placebo. The big ticket items like the engine & tranny are wear items, which the warranty won't cover. So what’s the point?

Sounds like Subaru's actuaries are spot on.  The cost of the warranty and deductible/service charge (I assume) rounds to about $1000, which is probably about the average cost to fix the most common claims.

I am always ambivalent about extended warranties - they aren't offered because they want to save YOU money.  On average, you will always come out behind.  However, that's true with any kind of insurance product.

The advantage you have is that you now know the car better than they do... how well it's been maintained, what problems might be brewing, etc.  That might sway your decision.

FYI: I have 2 Subarus and I did get an extended warranty to cover through the end of my payments.  I figure I can take it from there.
