Hey Scotty,

I'm looking to get a used s 7th gen Toyota Celica from a private seller and I see online that some of the sellers in my area usually have the mileage from 100k-200k miles with their original engine and some have their vehicles with a rebuilt enginge or swapped engines with 70k miles. Is there anything I should look out for from these celicas specifically the ones with rebuilt engines or swapped engines

Definite pass the engines weren't that well made, and they rebuilt it who knows how it was rebuilt

You definitely want to avoid the 2ZZ-GE engine, which was co-developed with Yamaha, and featured a 2-step variable valve lift control which had issues (Scotty also talks about in 1st link below).

Also see below for issues with that generation:

I would pass on those.

does the reliability change if it's between a gt or gt-s Celica. I see Scotty says to beware of the 2zz engine, But what about the 1zz engine in the gt as opposed to a gt-s with the 2zz

Some of the 1zz’s had oil burning issue, unfortunately.
