I have a 2003 Toyota Corolla with 200,000 miles and ever since I purchased it six months ago the temperature gage shows just one line just above the middle; is that normal?

Unless your car is overheating, it’s perfectly normal.

If you check your owner's manual, it will show you a picture of the gauge and what it considers the normal range.

A sanity check would be to hook up a scan tool to the OBDII port and see what the corresponding numerical engine (coolant) temperature is. What does it read for your vehicle?
For most vehicles, the normal temperature range will be 190 to 220 degrees Fahrenheit.

put in a lower degree thermostat. keep the engine cooler.
