Which Weekend Driver to terrorize the streets?

Topic starter

I need good suggestions on a fun weekend car for less than 20k. Preferably something that would terrorize the streets.

@mod_man can recommend some good weapons..

Clarification: What do you mean by terrorize the streets?

Terrorize like laying the rubber down 😂. I don’t need any weapons

Hmmmmmm.

Well, for $20k, here are some good options:

1. 2013 - 2014 Mustang GT

2. 2005 - 2006 GTO

3. C5 Z06 Corvette

4. 1998 - 2002 Camaro/Trans Am

It really depends on what you are looking to do with it and how much knowledge you have with working on cars. Realize that cars that go fast, break fast. It is their nature if they are being used to their full potential. Clarification: I'm not saying you can't buy a Corvette or Mustang and drive it normally without breaking things. It sounds like, to me, you're thinking about beating the snot out of it on weekends. And that is what will make things break prematurely. The more you can fix yourself, the cheaper repairs will be. If you aren't comfortable turning wrenches, you can take it to a good shop but know that performance work doesn't come cheap.

If you're thinking about getting into the street racing scene, don't. Been there, done that. Street racing is essentially an arms race of who has the biggest wallet to buy the most modifications. It is also extremely dangerous, and I'm not even talking about the speeds and cars or legality of it. There are seriously dangerous people in the underground scenes that you don't want to get mixed up with. Trust me.

Spirited driving is one thing, and still illegal. But for racing, keep it on the tracks. I know I sound like an old guy, but I've had a ton of experience in this area and some very close calls. Keep it legal and protect not just yourself but also your car that you've invested money in.

I agree with @Doc on this one and also would take the C5Z off the list. They are cars that take a responsible, capable driver to get the most out of and it sounds like you would put it around a tree pretty quick.

If you are interested in "laying the rubber down" it's pretty obvious that you are immature, irresponsible and have more money than brains.

Buy a moderate horsepower rear-drive car, and put narrow, low grip tires on the rears, but retain the regular front tires. You'll be able to spin tires and drift at more reasonable speeds, but retain the ability to brake and steer.

Losing grip on the rear tires is a sign of not enough tire and traction, not necessarily lots of horsepower and torque.

P.S. Please stay out of Maryland.

I’ve got a Base Pontiac G8 with 78,000 miles. it’s fun in the snow and all but I’m looking for something more powerful

Mustang V8 GT is always a good option or the Miata or if you don’t care a lot about reliability the Dodge Challenger is a fantastic option or if you want to stretch your budget and also make it your daily driver a Grand Cherokee SRT or Trackhawks are pretty cool and they stand out a lot considering the lower trims are driven by soccer moms all across America
