When I turned in my leased Toyota, I decided to drive a reliable cheap car that didn't cost much money. That lasted about 2 months, so I started looking around of a convertible of some kind and considered a BMW 1 Series because it fit my budget. Looked at a couple and knew right away that I may be searching for headaches. I saw the Top Gear review of the Lexus SC430 that called it the 'worst car ever made'. THAT show gave me the price supports I needed to pursue the vehicle seriously. I found a one-owner with THREE pages of Carfax service reports ( timing belt at 60K) all done at Lexus Dealers and 82000 miles and really priced reasonably. Because it was in Connecticut and it was a 2004 it was an 'AS IS' sale. That didn't bother me much because I knew the Toyota reliability was built in.
The day I picked it up, the roof gave me a little problem, but a few more pushes of the button got it to work. Then I had to start disconnecting the battery for 1/2 hour to reset the ECU. Then, it quit completely, even the red indicator on the roof up/down button no longer illuminated. I suspected a fuse at that point but unfortunately with the roof stuck in the trunk, I couldn't access the fuse panel that served the roof mechanism.
I broke down and brought it to my local Lexus dealer to get it hooked up to TechStream ( 20 degrees at 8:00 AM with the roof down!). Techstream gave me TWO codes:
B2533 Package Tray Switch No. 2
B2518 Open in Tray Motor Circuit
The service writer gave me retail prices on those two parts BUT ALSO wanted to replace the actual package tray which is straight mechanical. The final price with THREE parts plus labor of 217/per hour was $3900.
I said thank you and I'll think about it. $3900 is a little strong ( I'm not wealthy ) especially since he couldn't seem to offer any good explanation as to why the "boot" or package tray needed to be replaced.
Right now the vehicle is back in my garage at home and I'm afraid to hit the "open" button because I'm not sure the roof will go back up. I still have my every day car so I'm not really inconvenienced. Nonetheless I'd like to enjoy the convertible when the good weather gets here.
Any suggestions Scotty?
Thanks in advance,
Frank
Since your question wasn't answered, bump.
Why do they want to replace the tray?

If it isn’t electrical, it sounds like it may be the motor.
Take it to an independent Lexus mechanic & have them diagnose it. Never take a vehicle to the stealership unless it’s your last resort for a repair, or you’re performing a recall action.
Well I never take a Lexus to a Lexus dealer their crooks and rip off everyone.and I wouldn't use the sun if we never use the one on our Lexus they all leak eventually and they have problems it's a stupid idea anyways a sunroof windows work fine as does air conditioning
It's a convertible, not a sunroof. I have to say, when I works it's a thing of beauty and a marvel of engineering. On the Lexus forum, there are relatively FEW roof issues, but most-definitely the most-aggravating.
