My vehicle recommends a new timing belt every 100,000 miles. I changed the first one at 100,000 miles, which was 9 years after I bought the car. I am now at +7 years since the last change with 167,000 miles.
How long can timing belts go before they need to be changed, even if you have not yet hit the target mileage?
For example, is it 100,000 miles or 10 years, whichever comes first? Or, just wait as long as it takes to get to the target mileage?
Generally the new one doesn't last as long as the OEM one. We changed ours at 100k miles even though the owners manual said 60k miles, it lasted that long, but the next one probably won't last as long.
If yours is an interference engine, that means if the timing belt breaks your engine is a gonner, so you would want to change it soon.
If yours in a non-interference engine, that menas if the timing belt breaks, no damage is done to the engine and you can get it replaces. Only downside, you would be on the side of the road until the tow truck arrives.
I'm suprised your owners manual says 100k miles they generally say 60k miles or something like that.
Manufacturers always specify a milage interval but never a time interval. If you are below the specified milage I would think that the belt would be good for up to 10 years. After that, you may want to think about replacing it even if you are below the specified milage.
