Timing, chain or belt

Scotty, I would like your opinion on timing chains versus timing belts. In the 70s timing chains never seemed to be a problem but I’ve noticed massive amounts of especially GM vehicles needing new engines due to timing chain failures. Do you still recommend timing chains over timing belts? It seems that the Japanese cars with timing belts suffer far fewer catastrophic engine failures. Or is this just a problem with engineering at Ford Chrysler and GM. Thanks in advance. Your videos have been a great source of knowledge for me.

Timing chains can last a very long time if designed and maintained properly. I've run engines with timing chains into the 300K-400K mile range with no problem. On the other hand, poorly-designed engines have been known to need timing chains replaced in as little as 25,000 miles.

😱

@gew, that was the old Triumph Stag V8, an exceedingly poor design.
