Hi

I have a toyota camry 2000 4cyl with 161k kms on it. It starts to overheat when i go on the highway at 100km/hr but temp gauge is in the middle if I go slower.

Please let me know how to fix it. Thanks

The radiator is probably clogged up inside and is disrupting coolant flow and heat dissipation during faster speeds. It's a 2000 model year, I would try changing the thermostat and radiator, and I would also look into the water pump leak.

I know where you going towards geriscan and i have to admit i did felt the fans are running slow.

There has been a huge storm here in sydney recently and i was forced to drive through the bad whether even burnt my one fuse. (Lighter clock and mirror)

But the problem is that if the fan was the problem, it would overheat in high speed ? Because the wind is already blowing fast and clogged up radiator would overheat at low speed right ??

@speederrex
Exactly right, the fans are only useful at low traveling speeds or at a standstill to help induce better airflow through the radiator. Even if the fans weren't operating while on the highway going 100km/hr, the airflow from driving should be sufficient enough to cooldown the coolant properly. But you say the radiator is new, so it could be something else like the waterpump not working properly? It definitely cannot be the thermostat.

Hey i found the problem its the thermostat

I removed the thermostat and been driving on a highway. It didnt overheat.

The reason i suspected it was due to grugling sound it started to make so i open the hood it was coming from hose where thermostat was.

But now idk what to do .. if i replace it .. will it overheat again

Buy a new OEM thermostat and install it. The old one was sticking, that's why it didn't work.

@speederrex
Yes, replace with an OEM quality one.

Well, are all your cooling fans coming on? Are they moving as rapidly as they should be? You should check that.

Related to that, you may have a malfunctioning thermostat.

How do you check fans above 100 km/h?

at 100kph, there's so much air being forced through the radiator, that fans don't matter any more. This sounds more like a blockage.

When you replaced the rad cap, radiator and coolant, did you bleed/purge all the air out of the system?

That's a good question.

  1. I already added coolant and it still overheat
  2. The fans are working normally
  3. There is a small leak on the waterpump but its not that bad. The seal hasnt gone bad

If the water pump & thermostat is good, I’d advise checking for a blown head gasket.

Hey Razmiq

The radiator + the radiator cap is new with full red coolant

There's also a coolant temperature sensor. Perhaps the sensor is bad or the connectors or wiring. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=sekd3WCyJEE
