Toyota Hilux 2012, 2.5 D4D - Turbo Diesel rumble.rattle under load at cold.

Does anyone know if this is injector rattle on this 2012 Toyota truck? It only rattles when first cold start and the rattle disappears when it hits about 2000 RPM, and disappears once the engine is at operating temperature. No rattle at all unless the engine is under load. Thanks!

Every diesel truck I have ever been in sound just like this at cold start, especially in winter.

I am no diesel mechanic at all, but my 2 cents here is that you have a standard diesel truck with no erroneous issues as far as this goes.

Thanks for the response, I just bought it 3 months ago, it has 70,000KM, I have never owned anything with a turbo fitted before, just sounds a bit strange on startup, (cold start here is around 35C / 95F.)

You might consider going on youtube and finding videos of people just cold starting their diesel trucks. It might give you some reassurance.

I have been on Youtube, some sound similar, I was worried that it might be the injectors as if it goes untreated it can blow a hole in the pistons, most of the videos I have seen tend to have more of a knock, whereas mine is more of a rumbling rattle. I used to have the naturally aspirated 3.0L EFI Diesel which had over 250,000 on it and it did not have the same rattle as this newer model D4D, thanks for your help, appreciated!

Hy!

Usually timing chains do that but your engine has the timing belt. Any codes? There you can find more information about that engine (click here).

Good luck!

Many thanks! Yeah, I guess I need to by a scanner.

Thanks also for the link to that engine page! Some good info.

You are welcome. Diesel ignites under pressure. For a turbo is important you do not strain it until is warmed up. If previous owners did not consider that, you can expect you will have to replace it prematurely.

Well, this thing is low mileage for it's age, no oil leaks (oil actually stays pretty clean even after 5000KM) It starts OK, oil pressure seems good, no smoke at all even on a cold start and under acceleration. Pull the oil filler cap and there is almost no blow by. As far as the turbo goes, I usually let it warm yo a bit before running and also let it idle a while before shutting it off.
What I have noticed about this truck is that it takes a lot longer than my 3.0L EFI to reach operating temperature. The EFI was warmed up in about 1KM, this thing can take about 10-15KM before it is at temp. (This has the Intercooler and the horrific EGR valve and I believe it also has the DPF, the EFI had none of that junk) I am going to buy an scan tool so maybe it will shed some light on any issues. Had it out today for a 250KM run and it ran like a dream, loads of power, and compared to the EFI you would think the fuel gauge was broken with the fuel consumption, this thing is getting double the mileage and has what feels like twice the power. I just want to look after it as it will hopefully last me another 20 years like my old EFI. Thanks for all your help, greatly appreciated. Merry Christmas to you and your family!

Engine itself warms up very quickly. Oil not so fast. Do you also have an oil temperature gauge? If you want the turbine to last as long as possible, the oil needs to be warmed up. If no oil temperature gauge, I drive turbodiesels and do not exceed 2000rpm for at least 5 minutes in warm weather and 15 minutes in winter. And idling at the end, you are doing it right, 2 or 3 minutes.
If you think your engine doesn't warm quick enough, I suggest you check the thermostat.
Thank you and I wish the same to you and all yours!
