The Toyota D-4D engines are bulletproof and can run forever, if taken care of. I have seen them still on stock internals at 1,000,000 kms.

In my opinion, yes, the Hilux probably is the most reliable Ute, in the world. I don’t want to get stuck in the outback, after all.

The biggest enemy for common rail diesel engines (D-4D) is moisture. Be vigilant about the condition of the diesel you fill with, keeping the fuel filler free of water, filler cap always on, checking and changing fuel filter when recommended, and eliminating any moisture trapped. On a bulk tank or drum use a dip-stick with moisture indicating paste to see if water has condensed in the bottom.

Common rail is extremely high pressure (29,000 - 36,000 psi), which provides multiple injections (thinking 26 injections per firing) of finer droplets, the fuel injector pump only creates the high pressure and the ECU electronically controls each injector all drawing from the same high-pressure pipe (rail).

Because the injector holes are so fine, water does not fit through and can apparently blow the end of the injector.
