[Solved] Should replace my charcoal canister

I have a 2005 Pontiac vibe and the check engine light came on the other day and when I scanned it all these codes showed up at once: P043F P2419 P043E P2402 P2401. Toyota issued a technical service bulletin for this a while ago and it said the charcoal canister assembly needs to be replaced. It's easy to replace but the part costs about $400. I live in an area that doesn't require regular emission tests so I was wondering if it's okay if i don't replace it or will it eventually lead to more damage?

Yes you should replace it. It's not just for emissions testing.

Thanks. Just curious, what other purpose does it serve? I thought it only prevents vapour from being released into the atmosphere.

No. It regulates tank pressure, vents the filler neck, etc. Your engine has been engineered around the EVAP sytem. Engine vacuum is used for vent & purge cycles. If the system is faulty, not only will you have check engine lights (which will obscure other problems), but you could have problems with drive-ability and refuelling. Having a functioning emissions system is federal law, regardless of your state regulations.

Rock Auto has them for $175.
