Should I replace my brake rotors

Hi, I've got an 06 toyota solara 4cly, 131k miles now.

I wanted to change my brake pads and oil change and the mechanic says I need to change my rotors on every brake job lol.

Is this really required, they said they can't guarantee it won't squel unless the change the rotors as well.

Please advise, thank you.

The majority of the cost is labor. I guarantee they will find something to offset the profit on the parts. Look at some of Scotti's videos. Brakes are relatively easy to do. The way to save is do them yourself. You can check the rotors. If they aren't scored or out of round 9 times out of ten you don't need to change them. Then it's just pads and they go on relatively easy. If you need it fast let them do it and pay. If you are a first timer you don't want to rush.

At least you get a warranty although if your out of town that doesn't help much.

Good Luck

Opposing opinions are welcome.

did you look at the photos?

run away from this mechanic as fast as you can.

Hehehehe

Do you recommend I buy my own rotors and brake pads and have them installed it?
I don't have the tools pr a garage and my building doesn't tolerate any mechanic work on the premises.
What site can I use to buy good oem parts?
Brake pads and two rear rotors for an 06 toyota solara 4cyl 131k miles.

Most mechanics won't work that way, but if they do they will not guarantee the job other than their labor. So if say the brake rotors you provided were warped you'd be on the hook for getting replacements as well as the additional labor to swap them out.

What do you advise I do then. I need to replace the rear rotors and as well as the brake pads.

Only replace rotors if they’re damaged or below minimum thickness. Maybe find another mechanic

The rear brakes don't make contact with the entire rotor, wish tis site support pics I would have shown you what I was talking about. Most of it has superficial rust and just a thin line actually makes contact with the rotors, was planning on changing that, but didn't expect it to be that expensive given rotors seem relatively cheap on the internet.

Found this https://www.carparts.com/details/Toyota/Solara/SureStop/Brake_Pad_Set/2006/KIT1-042621-05-77-B.html?TID=gglpla&origin=&utm_source=google&utm_medium=pla&utm_campaign=14049184503&gclid=CjwKCAjwmJeYBhAwEiwAXlg0AR1lUp8JNyqkDOncQAtfV_0luUpwMqLB9jDfG0f_rSW7HHYKZS489hoCg7gQAvD_BwE&gclsrc=aw.ds

you can post pictures . See the "READ THIS FIRST" link on our main page.

Oh thank you, I didn't know when I initially got on the site.
Thanks

The 1st is the left rear wheel, the 2nd and 3rd are the front wheels and the 4th is the right rear wheel.
I don't have enough money to change all right now, so wanted to start with the rear wheels first.
If I plan to change all, will this set work

Please advise thank you

It's not necessary if the rotors are in good shape. The pads will conform to any minor imperfections as they break in. However I usually change the rotors since they're inexpensive. (I'm doing the work myself though. If having a mechanic do the job there are labor charges as well as markup on the rotors.) Of course if the rotors have deep gouges or are warped they need to be changed.

From the mechanics' point of view they have to guarantee the job and they might not want to do that if new rotors aren't installed.

Oh makes sense.
They priced me 750bucks,
I think I'll price around more, looking to change the rear rotors and all brake pads, about how much would be a fair price?

Granted I've been doing my own work for so long that I'm out of touch with what typical shop charges are these days, but that sounds pretty outrageous for rear pads and rotors. Rockauto.com sells the rear pads for about $30 and the rotors for about $30 each (leading brands). So even allowing for maybe 50% parts markup and $125 an hour for a couple of hours labor that $750 price just seems out of line.

Unless the rotors are scored or warped, just replace the pads.  Save the $$$.

I have pics above
The rear rotors are my main concern 😟

Are they scored or warped or not?  it's nearly impossible to tell from the photos.

You can't tell by looking. Here are some symptoms to look for

they are deeply grooved doc. They will absolutely trash new brake pads ... or worse

@MrBob thank you for the video, will surely attempt this when I visit my brother he has some tools and a garage space. Doesn't seem hard. Maybe cause it's scotty doing it. Lol

It's hard to tell with the wheels and brakes still on, but I think you need new everything.

Here you can see that a very prominent lip has formed at the edge of the rotor. The brakes have worn this one down a lot. It's not worth saving:

when the surface of the rotor is all rusty like this one there's something very wrong. The brakes aren't working properly and your stopping power is reduced. The calipers are seized or something:

@MountainManJoe you were spot on right, the brake calipers have seized, hence the new mechanic recommended I do the rear for now, due to insufficient funds, I e brake pads, rotors ad calipers, he said he said he inspected the front it's worn as well, but both rotor and pads still have some life left.
I'll change the front next month, if I have any trips planned lol 😆
I work remotely, so Honestly don't drive much unless I have a trip planned
Thank you again sirs

your front brakes are the most important ones. The do 75% of the work.

He did say so, but honestly until my paycheck next weekend, I'll not me able to afford the work at the moment, it was not in the budget. I'll endeavor to get that changed ASAP. Thank you again Sir

looking to change both rotors and brake pads

by the looks of it, there's a good chance you need calipers as well. That means brakes will have to be bled with new fluid.

I have a trip this weekend almost 650miles.

You shouldn't be going anywhere

THIS IS NOT A DUPLICATE, ASKING SOMETHING DIFFERENT HERE @admins THANK YOU LOL

Hi I've got an 06 4cyl toyota solara looking to change both rotors and brake pads, pictures of present state available here https://postimg.cc/gallery/xbmSCf6

(The 1st is the left rear wheel, the 2nd and 3rd are the front wheels and the 4th is the right rear wheel.)

Most shops are all stuck at 700bucks the job plus parts, FYI not oem aftermarket. Should I go with that or buy this set Link BELOW and pay roughly 300bucks to have it installed

https://www.carparts.com/details/Toyota/Solara/Powerstop/Brake_Disc_and_Pad_Kit/2006/P15KOE5482.html

Also they said they'll only guarantee their work and not parts if I bring my own parts.

Hoping to get this done tomorrow as I have a trip this weekend almost 650miles.

Please advise thank you

Are they scored or warped or not?  it's nearly impossible to tell from the photos.

The closeup of the rotor looks like light scoring but as you say it's hard to tell.

Bringing in those parts from carparts.com and paying $300 labor is going to save about $160 on the job. While that's a good amount to save, if there is any kind of problem with those parts it's going to turn into a nightmare that will more than obliterate those savings.

So should I just change the brake pads first, and wait and see.?
The front usually squel a little, that's why I wanted to change the brake pads.

If the rotors are really just lightly scored (don't feel very rough to your fingers) and not warped (you haven't been getting brake pulsations) you could do it that way. It's certainly better than running around with worn pads. Looking at the parts I realize now you're talking about doing all 4 wheels, I though it was just rear brakes. $700 to do front and rear pads and rotors is not a bad price.

THIS IS NOT A DUPLICATE,

This IS a duplicate. Consider this your last warning.

Thank yall for the insights, I guess I'll have to change it all then.
My wallet will bled tomorrow
