2004 Toyota 4Runner Limited V8 auto 4wd 214kmil
Transmission started slipping yesterday and is worse today. Fluid level checked yesterday and was good (according to my oil service guy).
It now slips 75% of the time. Slips when taking off from full stop, from rolling stop, at about any speed and up to any gear. Occasionally when coming to full stop it will aggressively downshift after stopped.
I live in a small mid-west town so very few mechanics willing to do much. Closest Toyota dealership is an hour away.
Other then this, the vehicle runs great and is solid (even for a road salt using state).
Do I do a fluid/filter change and have system scanned? Or does it sound like it's past that as a remedy and just move on to the expensive transmission change? (factory remanufactured correct? Or used?) I've also read that sometimes the connection between electronic system and the transmission can produce this symptom too. Where it connects directly to the transmission. Is that a possibility?
Thank you!
Surprising, usually those transmissions last longer than that. Are you the first owner? You can always try your luck and remove 1 quart of fluid and add 1 quart of lucas transmission fix, sometimes that'll work
2nd owner. Know previous owner as bought a 01 before.
I think you should go to an expert for proper diagnosis. They can hook up a machine to read the computer parameters like shift delays, and slip speeds etc. They can also hook up a pressure gauge to the test port and monitor line pressure, and stuff like that.
I don't really want to give you a half-baked internet diagnosis and mislead you.
@mountainmanjoe is right. It could be something that some Lucas Stop Slip could help, or it could be totally shot.
Simply due to the possible expense of a transmission which won't be cheap I would let a local mechanic check into it so you can be SURE before you spend any more money than you need to.
