Hello Scotty!

I just discovered your YouTube channel while I am searching for cars, I love your advice and expertise. I was watching the video about "5 best used cars" I was wondering how you feel about Toyota cars that are from the early 2000s. I am looking to spend around 3,000 so I know I won't be getting an insanely good car. I have found some online I can go look at a local auto auction and they have several Toyota models that are from 2000: a 2002 toyota camry, a 2002 Toyota corolla, a 2004 toyota camry, 2001 toyota corolla

What do you think about these years for a toyota?

Everyone commenting "Don't buy from an auction" please keep in mind that I am allowed to take the vehicle to my local mechanic and have them do a top to bottom inspection. I cannot afford to buy a car from a dealer and this auction has great prices, I am looking for a diamond in the rough though obviously

If you can take it to a mechanic before purchase or return it if you do not like it, it can be great deal.
Otherwise there is one of Scotty's videos explaining what you risk. Good luck!

Ok. Stay away from auction cars. Even though it is 3 grand, have a mechanic check it out before you buy it. Older Toyota's are only reliable if they were taken care of, seen on my 1997 troublesome Corolla.

2000, 2001 Camry seems good. 2002 Corolla best be avoided. 1998-1999 Corollas seem like very good cars. Also consider an early 2000's Toyota Avalon.

The XV30 Camry is basically bulletproof I would not buy an 02 but 03-06 is a very quality car.

I am the original owner of 1999 Corolla CE.  95,000 miles in Hawaii.  Recent transmission and brake fluid refills.  Both were ugly black.  Timing chain replaced at 60,000.  Oil changed every 3000 miles, which is yearly.  Just replaced air filter. No major problems at this time.  Is you anything I need to do for preventive maintenance?  Shoulv i look into buying a new Corolla? if so what trim line?  Thank you..

If it runs OK, there is no need to change the car. If well maintained, it can go over 300k miles. Just stick to maintenance manual what to look at.

Keep your eyes on the oil level. Those cars can burn lots of oil due to engine design issues.

I would avoid 02 corolla and 02 camry for engine issues dont buy from auction anyways a 98 corolla or 04 camry could do the trick just fine. 04-08 Corolla should also be a very good choise.
