Trans fluid replacement

So I found a few independent mechanics and I called one to get a quote for new trans fluid without a flush. In a few words, what he said was this: "We are not equipped for this, you need the machine."I wondered what machine he was talking about, I told him NO FLUSH. He told me to call AAMCO and a few others. 'eye roll' So I called AAMCO and they said 'Oh, we hook your vehicle up with a diagnostics machine to make sure you have no engine troubles or any other trouble. I have a feeling I know what this is leading up to... Looks like I will have to do it myself. Does this sound like a rip-off?  Sorry about the tags..I gotta start remembering these names...

I can’t vouch for aamco but I will say a lot of places that know better when a car comes in for an out of the blue transmission service they will scan it prior just to either A- tell them a transmission flush will not fix a problem that may be there and B- cover there own behinds from the shady customer ever since you flushed my transmission now it’s not shifting right haha so I would say not a rip off the covering their bases

Everywhere, private garage to dealerships, will check vehicles more than just perform one service request.

I happen to think some AAMCO dealers are great. Had one fix my transmission that had a leaking modulator valve, and they did it for free. Today it costs to even have car up on lift. You never know how any business will treat you until you do business with them.

True.. not all service facilities are created equally

It's normal for mechanics to run diagnostics. You can see that Scotty scans his customers' cars too.

I would want to know if they found any problems. If you don't want any other work done, then just thank them for the information and tell them you only want the transmission fluid+filter service this time.

Ask around for a recommended local mechanic that people like. AAMCO will just look to find other ways to make money. What type of vehicle? Some cars can be that easy to drain/fill.

@mountainmanjoe... I have too many trust issues.I have to get over that. I need a TON of references and total trust before they touch my car.

@Porkchophill its an '09 Honda Civic.

nothing wrong with being cautious and asking questions.

My trans is shifting perfectly..I want to keep it that way. I know mechanics....they'll hook up that machine and and all of a sudden, 10 things need attention.  They think because I'm a woman, with no husband, they can screw me over. My trans fluid is a little dirty, not much.

don't panic. They can do whatever they like with the scanner. Just tell them to note it all down on your bill for you, and that you'll think about it. You're not obligated to do anything.
