Howdy y'all! 2010 Subaru Outback. 121,000 miles. Manual transmission. Car travelling 70 MPH. Owner said his dog bumped the gearshift lever and caused the transmission to jump out of gear with the clutch engaged. He now says his transmission is damaged as a result. That doesn't sound right to me. What say y'all? Thank you!
bumped out of gear and into what? It's most likely went into neutral.
What does he mean by damaged? A damaged transmission would have symptoms. What are they?
That doesn't sound good. You never want to perform a clutchless downshift because of engine braking (engine braking is when the engine works against the wheel rotation and it helps slow down the car naturally), which will cause the drive wheels to lock up.
How does he know the transmission was damaged? Did it make concerning noises when it happened?
Good question, Razmig. Unfortunately I don't know the answer to that question and don't have a way to find out.
At this point, the owner's assertion is a claim, not a fact.
I would think with the load suddenly removed barreling down the road at 70 mph the engine would come dangerously close to self-destructing unless it had a rev limiter. As far as the trans, as Razmig asked, what are the symptoms?
Agreed, geriscan.
Hi Chuck. I haven't been able to find out the symptoms as of yet. I need to look into it some more. Thank you.
