Hey Scotty, need help, 2016 Toyota RAV4 has a sealed transmission (no dip stick) I’ve watched “professionals” on YouTube do a fluid change on this vehicle but only get a quart or two, I read somewhere there is another drain plug inside the first plug that will allow all the fluid come out (7 quarts) before I get myself in trouble with this DIY please advise on this specific vehicles transmission fluid change. Thank you
… here is a DIY (and more!) explanation how to do it:
… easy-peasy!
F.S.
Definitely no easy-peasy lol but thanks for the video. I probably didn’t put the exact amount back in because of some on the ground and I didn’t have a proper make on the bucket but if it’s over or under an ounce or two will it really make a difference? It runs fine after I changed it.
Here's a pretty in-depth explanation. Make your head hurt too.

The worst part about that transmission is that you actually have to do this procedure every 50,000 miles if you want it to last.
Personally I avoid the TM-60LS and other modern Toyota units like wildfire - it's impossible to rebuild.
Lol. I would just drain and fill on a Summer day with a cool engine.
Bet the whole concept was conceived to either keep that one drip of oil from destroying the environment, or to sell overpriced equipment to dealerships. Either way, the consumer is had.
Informative video! Thanks! So complicated tho. Can I just drain it cold and add exactly the same amount back in??
Yes. You can measure what comes out, or just fill till it overflows the straw on a cool engine. The difference between 80 and 104 degrees would be about 1 oz.
Be sure to barely snug the plastic straw when replacing. It only needs to not leak during the refill.
Awesome Carlos! Thanks
Have fun!
Ok, so I took the first drain plug and about a quart came out, then the green plastic tube and another 2 quarts came out and that’s it. The manual says 6.9 quarts, where’s the rest?? I don’t think it was short 4 quarts, no, because the first plug is for overspill. Second plug is supposed to drain it all? Advise please. Thanks. It was done cold and I only put back what I took out.
Only a portion will drain out. Sometimes only a third of the fluid. The rest stays inside the torque converter, etc.
Just put back the same amount you took out and it will be full.
Some people redo the procedure 2-3 times for a higher percentage of fresh fluid, but if you do a single drain and fill every 30-40,000 miles it will be enough.
Gotcha! Thanks
