Transmission (I think) noise while driving in mountains

2016 Honda Cr-v with the cvt, 80,000 miles. While driving in the mountains my car will intermittently make an odd whining/static-y noise. Not sure exactly how to describe it. If I change rpm's up or down the noise stops. It happens randomly while driving in the mountains but never on flat roads. I'm assuming it's the transmission since it seems to respond to rpm changes. Any ideas what it could be?

Thanks!

Jack front up and check cv joints.  Check wheel bearings and suspension while ya got it up.  CV joint most probable cause.
